Socrates and Asperger’s

August 15, 2010

I’m wondering about the connection between the socratic method of inquiry and asperger’s syndrome. An interesting conversation occurred here about the socratic style, as captured in the term ‘Gadfly‘.  These concepts seem to have prompted me to have another look at the syndrome known as Asperger’s.  Somewhat interesting is the possibility of a connection between the likes of Socrates and this syndrome.

I don’t know enough about the syndrome to comment much on it, but it appears that a lack of social skills is a prime symptom, coupled with a desire to seek the truth at all costs. In the case of Socrates, his truth-seeking resulted in his death at the hands of the state. Truly a high cost is associated to the truth, at least in his example.
